ARTISTS RASHAUN MITCHELL + SILAS RIENER DEBUT A NEW PERFORMANCE AT THE LONG ISLAND BAYSIDE NATURE PRESERVE IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE POST-MORROW FOUNDATION

The event uses performance art as a catalyst to bring together the wider Bellport-Brookhaven community.

First-ever outdoor dance performance of its kind at Post-Morrow Foundation nature preserve Bellport, NY, August 10 2022: Award-winning dance artists Rashaun Mitchell + Silas Riener will present “A Dance for Sunset” site-responsive performance at the Post-Morrow Foundation in Brookhaven, NY starting at 6:00 pm on August 27th, 2022. The performance, curated by artist Fabian Bernal, will be the latest iteration of their practice “Desire Lines”

Sponsored by members of the community and the brand Costa-Brazil, the performance will bring together diverse groups in Bellport and Brookhaven – north, south, younger and elder – in an evening of common purpose and exploration of the local natural environment.

Rashaun Mitchell + Silas Riener, first met at the Merce Cunningham Dance Company and have created over 25 multidisciplinary dance works including site-responsive installations, dance concerts, gallery performances and dances for film. Their partnership maintains a deep commitment to collaboration with a diverse community of dancers, performers, artists and cultural institutions.

The Post-Morrow Foundation aims to preserve Thomas and Elisabeth Morrow’s vision of the creation of woodlands, meadows and streams as wildlife sanctuaries for all to enjoy.

This site- specific outdoor dance performance “A Dance for Sunset” offers a space to reflect on the impact contemporary society has on the natural world. As the sun sets, dancers will engage with the land and water stewarded by the Post Morrow Foundation. Spoken word and music will guide the audience through the grounds, allowing each observer to choose their path through time while illuminating connections between the environment and each other. Vice President of the Post-Morrow Foundation, Thomas Williams, said: “We are looking forward to welcoming the visual and performance arts to our community and exploring the integration of the arts in our natural surroundings.”

Curator Fabian Bernal, and owner of Good Morning Bellport said: “I truly believe that performance art can bridge differences and help find a common ground and meaningful connections to build a stronger community. I am thrilled to bring these esteemed artists to our town and am grateful to the members of the community for coming forward to support this effort and make the performance possible.”

The performance will be preceded by an artists’ conversation at Marquee Projects in Bellport on Friday, August 26th. The conversation is open to the public and will be moderated by American artist Lia Chavez.

Founders of Marquee Projects, Mark Van Wagner and Tonja Pulfer, said: “We are excited to be part of this community effort celebrating the visual arts and bringing the public together with world-renowned artists.”

The event is made possible by sponsorship by members of the community and by Costa- Brazil, a sustainable beauty line created by Francisco Costa, built on the simple belief that the spirit of beauty is inseparable from the health of the earth. Costa said: “This performance embodies the essence of our brand, being both beneficial to the body and the spirit, as well as the earth.”

About the Post-Morrow Foundation

The Post-Morrow Foundation was born out of Thomas and Elisabeth Morrow's love of the rural countryside. They envisioned the creation of woodlands, meadows and streams as wildlife sanctuaries for all to enjoy. It was also important to them to stem the tide of suburban encroachment in the Brookhaven area. Since its establishment in 1969 the trustees of the foundation, along with community support, have endeavored to fulfill their dreams. http://www.postmorrow.org/
